Space-Saving Strategies: Maximizing Space in a Small Farmhouse for a Large Family

Living in a small farmhouse with a large family has presented unique challenges when it comes to space. However, with some smart planning and creative thinking, I like to think that I have optimized every square inch of my home to accommodate my family's needs. Here are couple of my go-to space-saving strategies that will help make the most of your small space:

1. Multi-purpose Furniture:

I always try to invest in multi-purpose furniture pieces that serve multiple functions. Look for coffee tables with built-in storage or a place for storage baskets underneath. These versatile pieces will help you maximize space by eliminating the need for additional furniture. Other options would a sofa that could also double as a pull-out bed for when guests are visiting. We haven’t invest in one yet, but probably will in the future.

2. Efficient Storage Solutions:

Utilize every nook and cranny of your farmhouse by implementing efficient storage solutions- sometimes that means going more vertical and using up the space up high. I have installed (or had Jay help install) shelves and hooks in hallways, bedrooms, and closets to maximize vertical space and create additional storage areas. When floor space is limited, think vertically. Install shelves, hanging baskets, or wall-mounted cabinets to take advantage of vertical space in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Use under-bed storage containers to store seasonal clothing and bedding. Opt for furniture with built-in storage, such as beds with drawers underneath or dining tables with hidden compartments. By keeping your belongings organized and stored efficiently, you can free up valuable space throughout your home.

3. Outdoor Living Spaces:

Extend your living space to the outdoors by creating functional outdoor areas. Set up a patio or deck with comfortable seating and dining options. Consider adding a pergola or canopy for shade during hot summer days. Add some colorful throw pillows, string lights and bright pops of green plants and you have a perfect outdoor space that makes your living spaces seem even bigger.

4. Streamline Possessions:

A large family often means a lot of stuff. I regularly take the time to declutter and streamline our possessions. Get rid of items that are duplicates, no longer needed or used. Donate or sell items that are in good condition but not essential for your family. By minimizing clutter, you'll create a more organized and spacious environment for your family to thrive in.

Living in a small farmhouse with a large family requires creative thinking and strategic planning to optimize space and ensure everyone's enjoys our space. By incorporating multi-purpose furniture, efficient storage solutions, utilizing vertical space, creating outdoor living areas, and streamlining possessions, you can make the most of your small farmhouse. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with living in a tight space, and with some resourcefulness, your small farmhouse can become a cozy and functional haven for your large family.
