Our Farmhouse Now Happening

We are buying our house! It has been years of waiting and patiently (sometimes impatiently) knowing that the right time would come. However, the day has arrived and we are finally going to get to buy our farmhouse.

As you can see from the photos when we moved in and began renting it from the family farm, the house was in need of some care, fixing up and a lot of manual labor. Almost everywhere we looked was something that could be fixed, cut down, painted, repaired or thrown away. For the past 13 years, we have spent hundreds- if not thousands- of hours working to bring this beautiful property back to a slice of its original glory.

When we were able to begin preparing the house to live in together after we got married, we knew right away we had our hands full. We had an in-floor heat grate (no furnace), knob & tube wiring, no insulation in all walls and a random water feature in one of the corners.

Over the summer, Jay along with family members worked to update all the wiring and get the main floor updated so that it was more livable. We took out an entire wall to open the living room so you could see the staircase. We ripped up plaster, tore off wallpaper and carried out ancient canned goods that were at least triple my own age.

By the time we moved in, we had a comfortable home on the main level. The work was far from done though. Over the next decade, we cut down hundreds of trees. We renovated the upstairs and didn’t even get it painted before our oldest daughter arrived 2 weeks early. We cut down broken fences, cleaned out countless spaces and repaired buildings to protect and preserve what was already there. I discovered my love for gardening and have continually planted gardens around all sides of the house and even ventured into a large vegetable garden. Jay used his ability to build or fix just about anything and turned the old milk room off the barn that once housed the mill tank for the mil truck pick ups into a chicken coop.

We’ve absolutely loved living here. We have been here just shy of 13 years and know that this is where we want to be while we raise our kids. We also know that we love the history and character of our house and while we have done many updates and brought her back to life in many ways- we are not done.

We are about to venture into uncharted territory as we are going to do an addition complete with a basement, master suite and much larger mudroom (no more waiting in line to get inside!). We plan to include you as we (let’s be real, it’s Kylie!) do updates and such on our new blog.

Make sure to subscribe to follow along on our renovation project & other fun adventures our crew has.
